Jiri: Geisha (芸者) are traditional Japanese hostesses. The meaning of words in Kanji of Geisha mean "Art" (芸) and "Person" or "Doer" (者). The more literal meaning of Geisha is "Performing artist" or "Artisan". they are also referred as geiko (芸子) in the western part of Japan, including Kyoto. They specialize in the art of traditional music, dance and games. Before they become a full-fledged Geisha, they're considered Maiko until the age of 15, in Kyoto, or 18, in Tokyo. Historically, they sometimes began their training at the early age of 3 to 5. They do not need to be a Maiko before turning into a Geisha, but have to train through a whole year.
